It has been very hot across the region the past several days for this time of the year. We have seen record heat all across the Upper Midwest. High temperatures both Saturday and Sunday were extremely warm.
On Sunday, temperatures hit the 90s throughout most of the region. Madison was the warm spot as it hit 99 degrees.
Appleton and Morris both topped out at 97 degrees.
Some locations in northern Minnesota were cooler with highs in the 80s on Sunday. However, temperatures were still 10-15 degrees above average in that part of the state.
[Monday was also very warm with highs again in the 90s across much of Greater Minnesota. Some spotty showers and thunderstorms moved across the Upper Midwest late Monday into Tuesday.
Expect temperatures to be 10 to 15 degrees above average for Wednesday. Some spotty showers and thunderstorms will again be possible during the afternoon heat. We could certainly use the moisture.
We should cool down a bit by the weekend with highs in the mid to upper 80s expected.
Weather history: On this date in 2002 records show that an “extensive flash flood begins across northwest Minnesota.” Officials say that 14.55 inches of “rain fell over the next 48 hours near Lake of the Woods.”
Weather facts: A flash flood is a “sudden local flood” usually due to heavy rain. In 2019, 92 people died in flash floods in the United States.
