Mark Anthony Meteorologist
I hope you had a chance to get out and enjoy the nice weekend. We had temperatures in the 40s and 50s over the weekend with a mix of clouds and sunshine.
It was great to see an end to the rain and have drier weather move in following all the moisture last week. Some locations received over three inches of rain from Tuesday to Friday. I know many of you might have seen that the grass is starting to green up following all the rain last week.
Just when you thought that spring was finally here for good, we had some rain mixed with snow return to the region Sunday night into Monday as a weak low system pushed into the state. Northwestern Minnesota saw the most snow from this system.
Temperatures on Tuesday were well below average with lingering snow across the region. Some light accumulation fell in many spots.
Drier weather will return for the midweek, but the clouds are expected to hang around. Temperatures should warm up to more seasonal temperatures for this time of the year.
Another system could bring some additional rain to parts of Minnesota on Friday. Right now, it appears that southwestern Minnesota will see the best chance of rain late this week.
Keep thinking warm thoughts and that we will get back into the 60s and 70s.
Weather history: On this date in 1886 historical records show that the “deadliest tornado in Minnesota history” took place. The tornado ripped through “St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids, leaving 72 people dead.” In addition, “80 percent of all (the) buildings in Sauk Rapids would be leveled as the tornado’s width expanded to 800 yards!”
Weather facts: Tornadoes have occurred “with some frequency” in Minnesota from April through September. However, the Minnesota tornado season is historically at its “height between May through August.”
