Blessings abound, even with the weather

By Mark Anthony, Meteorologist

Light snow and light rain fell across the region Saturday night into Sunday morning. Most areas picked up a dusting on up to an inch of snow. This system moved out quickly and pushed off to the east. Highs were generally in the lower 30s on Sunday.

Another system arrived Monday night into Tuesday. This brought some additional light snow to the state of Minnesota. One to three inches of snow fell mainly north of I-94.

After this recent activity we will see drier weather settle in for Thanksgiving and into the weekend. For those of you who will be doing some traveling for Thanksgiving and over the holiday weekend, it should be clear sailing with no big storms on the horizon. High temperatures on Saturday are expected to climb into the low- to mid-40s.

By the way, just six years ago in 2014 we had the coldest Thanksgiving Day since 1930 when President Herbert Hoover was in office. Temperatures fell to 2 below in the Twin Cities while Bemidji dropped to an even colder 20 below. There was also some freezing rain and snow on Black Friday that year.

Thankfully, this year we will have some much warmer temperatures and quieter conditions for Thanksgiving Day and into the weekend.

I know this year is crazy with everything going on, but we do have much to be thankful for with our families and other loved ones. Please take time to give thanks for those many blessings.

Have a great Thanksgiving and be safe!

Weather history: On this date in 1820, historical data shows that “Fort Snelling is in the middle of a three-day blizzard.” The storm would bring nine inches of snow to the area.

Weather facts: Did you know that some blizzards can have wind speeds as “strong as a category one or category two hurricane?”
