Peter Heid of Kimball became ill in late August while harvesting in Minot, N.D., with his crew. He quickly deteriorated requiring life support. After many tests, he was diagnosed with West Nile virus. Peter continues to be hospitalized at Trinity Health Hospital in Minot where he has been since Aug. 25. Peter is still waiting placement into a long-term facility that can manage his needs, which is where he will reside for many months.
The virus has resided in his spinal column which has caused him to be paralyzed. He has been in and out of the ICU. He continues with a tracheostomy and oxygen for breathing. He is able to talk with help of a voice box. He continues to work with speech therapy to hopefully regain use of his own voice. He has a feeding tube for total nutrition even though he is able to tolerate some food and liquids. His body is still terriby weak. He is not able to lift his head from the pillow, nor is he able to use his arms or legs. He is still requiring extensive inpatient rehab to regain his muscle strength. Even though he is making some progress, he has a very “long” and difficult road to recovery still ahead. He wants to “FIGHT the BITE!”
Peter is very grateful for all the prayers and visits.
