Website, email problems

By Jean Doran Matua, Editor

I’m going to count this as just a one of the many surprises of this year. We’ve been experiencing hacks to our website for many months. It got so bad that we were sometimes locked out of updating it, so we changed hosts to improve the situation.

After an easy month or so with the new host, different attacks were launched on our website. Most of the attacks were from China, Russia and Mongolia. (Our website domain is from Mongolia – the .mn is for Mongolia, not Minnesota – and we felt that maybe made us good “targets” for hacking.)

So, to alleviate that situation, I purchased the tricountynews.com domain about two months ago. The question was when and how to launch the new domain name, though.

Then came new hacks just last week that brought our site down. Several hundred dollars more to try to fix that, and it was nearly fixed (it’s still not up) and I thought maybe now is the time to switch to the new .com domain. I hadn’t considered that all our email addresses with .mn would be affected too.

Short story: hackers broke our website, but I broke our emails. All should be “normal” by the end of this week!
