Active weather pattern brings isolated showers or thunderstorms

Mark Anthony Meteorologist

Severe weather pushed across portions of Minnesota this weekend as a series of weather disturbances invaded the region.

On Sunday, Pennington County had a brief tornado touchdown west of Thief River Falls. Also in Pennington County, there were reports of strong winds of 77 mph near Thief River Falls. This caused trees to topple in that part of the state.

On Saturday, large hail was reported in Beltrami, Cass, Hubbard, and Lac Qui Parle Counties. In addition, there were reports of wind damage in Renville and Yellow Medicine Counties. The high school in Granite Falls had the roof blown off of it along with water damage as a result of heavy rainfall.

All the heat and humidity over the weekend made for an unpleasant couple of days if you had to work outside, and I think most of us knew that some storms were going to break out somewhere across the region.

Drier and a more comfortable air mass pushed into the Upper Midwest by Monday. We enjoyed another nice day Tuesday before more showers and thunderstorms looked to return late Tuesday into Wednesday.

The best chance for widespread showers and thunderstorms appears to be on Thursday and again on Saturday.

Have a great midweek.

Weather history: On this date in 2000, “record setting dew points developed across Minnesota.” The National Weather reported the “Twin Cities having a dew point of 76,” while Faribault had a “rare dew point” of 80 degrees.

Weather facts: The dew point shows the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. The higher the dew point, the higher the level of moisture in the atmosphere at a given temperature.
