History of American Legion programs

March marks National Security Month. Looking into how our
programs started and how we
support them.
The American Legion from its birth has been the foremost champion of national security. Legionnaires, being war veterans, made realistic by battlefield experiences, are keenly aware of America’s need for a strong defense. Adequate training and equipment have grim meanings for the men and women who have been called upon to bear arms in the nation’s defense. They know from experience how important it is to go into combat with good and sufficient equipment and know well both how to use modern arms as well as how to defend against them.
During the years between WWI and WWII, the American Legion almost alone kept the torch burning for peace through strength. But it was instrumental in securing the enactment of the National Defense Act of 1920. It deserves credit for whatever greater measure in which America was prepared for the second WW than it was ready for first global conflict.
The American Legion stands proud in all its years of championing an adequate national defense that has never been wrong in any of its major recommendations. The march of events has always justified the rightness of the American Legion’s national defense position.
The American Legion was 33 years old when this was written. So you may wonder how this is important in our little town of Kimball? Very important. A couple examples are: Police protection and Fire Department. In the month of March our Auxiliary fixes the Fire Department a “meeting meal.” Usually sloppy Joes, chips, and fixings to thank them for what they do. The police lead us in our Kimball Days Parade so we can be safe on our march around town. It does get more complicated as it moves up to the National level but we are still here supporting our programs and with your continued support our programs and with your continued support we can keep the torch burning. Please thank our veterans, police, and fire department for what they do also.
